AC servicing near the coast: why Kollam units fail sooner
The short answer
An air conditioner within a few kilometres of the coast should be serviced twice a year rather than once. Airborne salt settles on the outdoor unit and corrodes the aluminium fins and copper coil, which first shows up as weak cooling and a rising electricity bill, and ends as a refrigerant leak in a coil that has to be replaced rather than repaired. Servicing before summer, and again after the monsoon, is what keeps a coastal unit at its full life instead of half of it.

What salt air actually does
The outdoor unit of a split AC is a heat exchanger: aluminium fins pressed onto copper tubing, with a fan pulling air through them. It works by having a very large surface area exposed to the outside, which is precisely what makes it vulnerable.
How much difference this makes is not a matter of opinion. In accelerated salt-spray testing of the kind manufacturers use to rate coil coatings, untreated aluminium fins reach the point of detaching from the copper tubing while coated coils of the same design are still intact. That is a laboratory timescale rather than a Chavara one, but the mechanism and the ordering are the same, and it is why a corrosion-protected coil is worth asking about here and largely irrelevant inland.
Near the coast, that surface collects airborne salt. Salt is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against the metal instead of letting it dry — so the fins spend far more of their life wet than they would inland. Aluminium in contact with copper in the presence of salt water is a textbook galvanic pair, and the aluminium is the one that corrodes.
- The fins go powdery and white, then thin, then crumble — and each stage cuts how much heat the unit can dump.
- Corrosion pinholes the coil, refrigerant leaks out slowly, and the unit cools worse and worse until it stops.
- A leaking coil is usually a replacement rather than a repair, and it is one of the most expensive parts of the machine.
- Long before any of that, the compressor is working harder against a blocked, corroded coil — which is the part of this that shows up on the electricity bill.
How often, by where you are
Distance from the water is the variable that matters, and it changes faster than people expect — the difference between the coastal strip and a few kilometres inland is large.

The best time for the main service is before summer rather than during it. Everyone calls in the same fortnight when the heat arrives, and that is when slots are hardest to get and a failed unit waits longest for a part.
What a real service includes
"AC servicing" covers everything from a filter rinse to a full strip-down, and the price difference between them is mostly honest — they are different jobs. What should be in a standard service:
- Indoor unit: filters cleaned, blower and coil cleaned, drain line cleared and flushed.
- Outdoor unit: coil washed down properly, fins checked, fan and housing cleaned.
- Drainage checked under running conditions — a blocked drain is the most common cause of water dripping into the room.
- Gas pressure and cooling performance measured, not guessed at.
- Electricals checked: connections, capacitor, and the unit drawing what it should.
A deep or jet clean goes further, taking the indoor unit apart to clean the blower wheel and evaporator properly. That is worth doing when the airflow has dropped, when there is a smell when it starts, or every couple of years as a matter of course.
Do not pressure-wash a condenser coil yourself. The fins bend flat under far less pressure than people expect, and a flattened fin blocks the airflow it exists to allow — which does the same damage to your cooling as the corrosion you were trying to wash off.
Getting more life out of a coastal unit
- Rinse the outdoor coil with fresh water periodically between services — gently, no pressure washer. This is the single most effective thing an owner can do.
- Site the outdoor unit out of direct salt spray and direct sun where the installation allows it. A shaded position on the leeward side is worth years.
- Do not box it in. A cover or an enclosure that restricts airflow makes the unit work harder and holds damp against the metal.
- If you are replacing a unit near the coast, ask specifically about corrosion-protected or blue-fin coils. The premium is small against a coil replacement.
